Proposed Clayton County Office Building Plans
On November 8, 2011, residents voted on, and passed, a question to determine if Clayton County should enter into a loan agreement and issue its general obligation bonds in an amount not exceeding $895,000 for the purpose of renovating a building and adjoining parking lot for use as county offices.
Clayton County Office Building Options: Q&A
Why is the County Considering Remodeled Office Space?
The current office building (Old Asylum Building) is in need of extensive repair, as well as changes to comply with the American Disability Act standards. The building was not designed for office space, thus is only 65% efficient because of the layout, according to Gardner Architecture of Strawberry Point.
Can the Current Office Building be Remodeled?
Yes, estimates by Gardner are $3,048,307 for complete renovation, including $80,000 for
increased parking.
Why Did the County Purchase the DeLong Building (Former Land's End Building) Last Year?
Timing and opportunity. The previous Board of Supervisors placed a bid of $274,000 on the building that was assessed at $327,615 and had been for sale for a lengthy period of time as it offered features needed at the current office building.
Why is the County Considering DeLong Building Renovation?
The cost estimate by Gardner of $886,122 is considerably less than renovation of the current building. Office use space is more effective; all on one floor, American Disability Act compliant, and the site has increased parking with good access. What Are Cost Estimates to the Individual Tax Payer for the DeLong Buidling Remodeling Option?
A $100,000 assessed value home will pay $4.70 per year.
A 40-acre parcel of $48,000 assessed value of farmland will pay $3.21 per year.
A $100,000 assessed value commercial building will pay $9.70.
Any Other Options Considered?
Yes, building a new building on county land near the Law Enforcement Center at a cost estimate
of approximately $2.4 – 2.8 million, or on another site to be determined with additional land
purchase costs.
Will the Project Be Bid Out?
Yes.
What Would Happen to the Old Office Building if the County Moves to a Different Location?
The building and property will be sold through a bid process.
Would the Supervisors Office Be Moved and the Building Sold?
These are options under consideration if all other space requirements are met first.
What Happens if the County Does Nothing at This Time?
Location of some services in this county could be at risk.
