Actually this last month at the sheriff’s office it has been pretty busy.  Drug use and investigations are up.  Meth labs and marijuana grows are up.  Theft reports are down a little bit.  A lot of sexual assault complaints are going on.  My experience is that this is normal.  They always say things go in “threes” and when I was criminal investigator it seems we would get three and then it would be quiet for a couple of months.  April is also National Sexual Assault Awareness month.  I researched a few tips for you, but it is geared toward the younger crowd;
  • Avoid abuse of alcohol.  It is often a factor in date rape and other sexual assaults.  It also doesn’t make you think clearly.
  • Trust your instincts about possible danger.  If someone or something makes you uneasy, get out or away.
  • Be willing to ask for help to ensure your own well-being.
  • Be committed to the safety of others.  Make the effort to help friends get home safely.
  • Know the person you are dating.  Meet new people in public places.  Date in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.  Whenever possible walk with a group of people or a friend.

Most recently here at the sheriff’s office we have been enjoying the warm weather with a little increase in calls for service.  Scams seem to be going on all the time, and the most recent one was with a victim who received a phone call from someone claiming to be with Medicare.  The suspect asked the victim for her bank account numbers for a new Medicare card that was coming out and stated it was required by law.  The victim did not give the personal information out but this indeed was a scam.  There are hundreds of scams going around either by mail, email, or telephone.  Criminals will do about anything to gain access to your credit cards or personal information.  If you are suspicious about it, I would recommend not doing it.

Just a reminder with spring approaching there may be some “Black Ice” forming in the mornings on the roadways and sidewalks.  I just went out to my woodstove this morning and fell on some and sprained my ankle.  It didn’t look that icy where I was walking.  Black ice is transparent and hard to see.  Please use caution and slow down while driving if you think it may be slippery.

CLAYTON COUNTY SHERIFF PROUD OF QUALITY, COST EFFECTIVE HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR DETAINEES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER

This month in “What’s New in County 22” I thought I would inform everyone on our health care services for inmates.  I am committed to providing quality health care services for the inmates of the Clayton County Law Enforcement Center. That’s why I am proud of the healthcare program I put in place two years ago for the inmates with its focus on raising the standard of inmate care while containing costs, despite an economy where expenses keep increasing. Prior to this program the sheriff’s office had to pay for any sick inmates that were not covered by insurance because they were in our care.  With its current program, the jail has cut costs for its medical program by more than half compared to what we were previously spending, saving nearly $30,000.

Thanks to the mild winter we have been having, knock on wood, things have been slower than normal this time of year at the sheriff’s office.  I guess I shouldn’t say slower, just slower in the traffic accident department.  I’m sure winter is still coming and will probably come all at once so please drive safely.
